The Gift of the Arts Arts Center gives back to Island community
Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, the world's attention has been focused on New York City and the families of the victims who died in the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.

Hilton Head Island, like so many other communities across the United States, has given generously to the numerous organizations involved in rebuilding the city and helping the many affected by the tragedy.

As of this writing over $1.5 billion has been given to relief efforts. Equally important is this commu-nity's determination to move ahead with plans and projects that enhance and improve the lives of all who call this island home.

"If we don't go on with our lives, they win," said Ernst Bruderer, a member of the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina's Board of Trustees. "We can't allow that to happen."

As the Lowcountry's foremost cultural and arts institution and the state's third largest arts organization, the Arts Center plays an important role in the continuing development of the region. Through the generous support of individuals, local businesses and corporations, the Arts Center is able to offer a wide array of visual and performing arts programming that contribute to the cultural and economic health of the community.

The Arts Center also offers outreach and education programs, including field trips, classes and free outdoor festivals, to reach those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in the arts.

"We need the support of the whole community to make this kind of programming possible," said Barbara Peck, the Arts Center's director of institutional development. "Ticket sales and subscriptions don't begin to cover our operating costs."

Like most major non-profit art institutions, about half of the Arts Center's budget comes from grants and private contributions. The organization relies on funds raised from the Annual Giving Campaign to help finance its live theater productions, presenting series, gallery exhibits and education and outreach programs.

"You don't have to be a major contributor to make a difference," Peck said. "Every donation is important, no matter how small."

Not only does it add up to significant sums of money, it helps the Arts Center raise funds from other sources, including foundations and corporations who look for organizations with strong community support.

"We have to continue to give to local fund-raising efforts like the Annual Giving Campaign to show that we care about our quality of life," Bruderer said. "We can't have a well-rounded community without the arts."
